Family finds The Salvation Army on its Search for the American Dream

American Dream

The Smith family recently emigrated from Europe to St. Charles to be closer family. Mr. Smith quickly found employment and his family was settling in to their new life.

Smith, the family’s main breadwinner, was injured at work, and the family’s main source of income was lost. The family was quickly running out of savings and in danger of falling behind on rent, utilities and other bills.

The family’s landlord referred them to The Salvation Army Tri-City Corps Community Center for emergency assistance. After reviewing the circumstances, the corps was able to help the Smith’s pay for a month of rent and utilities, and signed them up for regular assistance through the food pantry. They were also connected with other service agencies that could provide additional support.

“I don’t know what we would’ve done without The Salvation Army. We were so stressed out. The staff really took some of the burden off our shoulders for a while. We are so grateful”

At the start of the school year, a concerned teacher reached out to the Army requesting basic school supplies for the boys. The Army was able to provide folders, paper, scissors, rulers, pencils and more so the children can focus on learning.

The Smiths still face some hard battles, but Mr. Smith is now working part time with a new delivery company, a lead from The Salvation Army’s job postings bulletin board. He enjoys his new job, and hopes to be working full time soon.
