New Golden Diners Kitchen!

Volunteers making up meals for seniors!

Today, we partnered with the city of Elgin to launch a new kitchen to provide nutritious hot meals for our Golden Diners program, which delivers meals to seniors from Kane and McHenry counties! This kitchen will be at the Hemmens Cultural Center in Elgin. This is designed to increase efficiencies and eliminate current waiting lists for seniors who need home delivered meals!

“I am extremely pleased that we are able to partner with The Salvation Army Golden Diners to offer them a more economical way to provide meals for our area senior citizens,” said Elgin Mayor David Kaptain. “This also enables us to utilize the Hemmens Cultural Center in a way that helps provide service to the community. It’s a win-win for everyone, which is why we continue to pursue these types of partnerships.”

“We could no longer keep up with the need and had to establish a waiting list for the first time since the program was established in 1974. Thanks to the support of Mayor Kaptain and the city of Elgin, the Central Kitchen will enable us to serve about 800 meals a day and remove 87 seniors from our waiting list”, said Golden Diner’s program director Salvation Army Major Ken Nicolai.

Over 5,000 seniors are served in these two counties by this program. Homebound seniors receive a friendly visit and a hot, nutritious meal, also a wellness check. Meals are free for low-income seniors, others are encouraged to donate $3.50. State and federal funding makes up about 45 percent of the necessary funds for Golden Diners. The rest is provided by the Salvation Army, local townships, the United Way and private donations.

Golden Diners is in need of additional volunteers to assist with preparing and delivering meals. For more information, how to volunteer or support the program, please call (630) 232-6676 or visit www.salarmychicago.org
