On Tuesday morning, a truck filled with brand new mattresses rolled up in front of The Salvation Army’s Harbor Light Center, an alcohol and substance abuse treatment facility in Chicago’s west loop. A total of 500 mattresses, provided by Stearns & Foster®, will benefit people served by The Salvation Army Metropolitan Division. This is one of three deliveries, with additional stops at the Evangeline Booth Lodge family shelter and Booth Manor senior residences. The donation is courtesy of the luxury brand’s Gift of Sleep program held during the holiday season.

For three consecutive years, the luxury brand has donated mattresses to Salvation Army residential facilities. While a new mattress provides an opportunity for a restful sleep, it can do so much more. A room and a bed to call one’s own provides the comfort of home and a sense of normalcy for those The Salvation Army helps while facing hardship or overcoming a crisis. The Gift of Sleep program seeks to call attention to Americans experiencing hardships and emphasizes The Salvation Army’s need for donations and other support throughout the entire year.

The donation of these mattresses will go a long way in helping those we serve successfully reclaim their lives,” said Captain Merrill Powers, Co-Director of The Salvation Army’s Harbor Light Center.

Since its inception in 2010, the Gift of Sleep program has donated $3 million dollars in new mattresses to The Salvation Army residential facilities throughout the United States. We are grateful for Stearns & Foster’s continued support and desire to create a sense of home for those we serve. We look forward to a continued partnership.
