About Salvation Army’s Disaster Services
Disasters come in all forms, from headline-making tornadoes, floods and blizzards to personal disasters, such as home fires. But, whatever disaster strikes, you can be assured The Salvation Army’s Emergency Disaster Services personnel will be on hand providing comfort, care and assistance to both victims and first responders.
The Army’s mission is two-fold: support first responders, such as police and firefighters, and provide on-site care for victims. Rehabilitation Units provide water and meals to first responders and disaster victims, with disaster victims also receiving counseling and emergency shelter assistance. To assist with the aftermath of disasters, cleaning kits and supplies are made available to those who need them.
Salvation Army Emergency Disaster Units are part of an interagency disaster mobilization team that responds to catastrophic events, such as Hurricane Katrina and the devastating earthquake in Haiti.
From major flooding to individual home fires, in 2014, Emergency Disaster Units in the Metropolitan Division were on the scene at 39 calls, touching the lives of more than 36,678 victims and first responders. But numbers don’t tell the whole story. The real story is in the lives touched and how people were helped through their traumatic events with aid, comfort and a loving hand.
