Hunger Affecting All Incomes – Erasing Hunger in Oakbrook Terrace, Illinois
The Oakbrook Terrace Corps demonstrates compellingly how the economy has affected families even in comfortable suburban communities. We see once high-income people who have lost their jobs using our food pantry. We see middle-income people who have lost their jobs, exhausted their unemployment benefits and still cannot secure employment. They also have exhausted any savings they may have had.
Our Corps offers a food pantry that is open Monday through Friday all day, as well as one Saturday morning a month from 9 to 11 A.M. We are recipients of a grant from the Northern Illinois Food Bank that has enabled us to increase the inventory in our pantry since February. We serve 45 households, or 180 individuals, every week. We provide food at least once to everyone who requests it. If they do not reside in our service area, we then provide information on other food pantries in their area.
When the grant runs out in July, we will find providing enough food a challenge. A monetary donation to the Northern Illinois Food Bank on our behalf would stretch our buying power as they are our best priced source for food.
